Newsflash: Rockaway had record crowds this weekend

Rockaway Beach

According to a Parks Department spokesperson, Rockaway’s beaches hosted a record number of visitors this past Sunday.

Underscoring the traffic and mass transit nightmares that residents and visitors experienced, Sunday July 19th, was by far the busiest day of the summer yet. As the mercury climbed to 89 degrees, the city beaches hosted an estimated 410,000 sunbathers.

The previous record was set on July 12th, with an estimated 290,000 visitors:

Date Temp Attendance
July 10, 2015 86° 70,000
July 11, 2015 86° 280,000
July 12, 2015 86° 290,000
July 17, 2015 80° 93,000
July 18, 2015 83° 27,000
July 19, 2015 89° 410,000

These estimates do not include visitors to Riis Park and Fort Tilden, which are managed by the National Parks Service.

Responding to complaints of two-hour traffic jams onto and out of the peninsula, Councilman Eric Ulrich and Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder met with representatives of the MTA, NPYD. The agencies have agreed, in their respective capacities, to increase manpower and readjust traffic patterns this weekend.
