Surf shops and schools, 2015 edition

Rockaway is home to the only official surfing beach in New York City, and probably the only surfing beach in the world accessible by subway. If you want to catch a wave, or need any beach related gear, there are a number of great surf shops and schools, and you can find a map of them here.

Boarders Surf Shop is owned and operated by a father-son team of local surfers. The shop carries a wide selection of bathing suits, wetsuits, surfboards as well as skateboards. They also offer locker, board and wetsuit rental, in addition to showers, bathrooms and changing rooms. Location: 192 Beach 92nd Street, 718 318 7997.

Breakwater Surf Co. also offers daily board and wetsuit rentals. In addition to a full selection of bathing suits and flip-flops, they have a wide variety of skate-influenced clothing and footwear. Location: 67-20 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, 347 619 8376.

Rockaway Beach Surf Shop has been open for over 40 years, and claims to be the oldest surf shop in New York City. In addition to the usual beach, surf and paddle gear, this family owned store boasts a stock of over 2,000 Rockaway-themed t-shirts.

The Breezy Point Surf Shop serves the western end of the peninsula. With the usual assortment of beach gear, surf and skate boards, the shop also has a full selection of beach chairs. Location: 61 Point Breeze Avenue, 718 318 2381.

If you need a little guidance on the ocean waves, there are some great surf schools in the area. Skudin Surf (855 433 3350), New York Surf School (718 496 3371), and Locals Surf School (347 752 2728) are all located on the ocean at Beach 67th Street, and offer a host of private and group lessons year-round.

Standup paddle boarding is growing in popularity, and now Rockaway has the only shop in the greater New York area devoted specifically to that sport. A-Team Paddle Boarding is now open at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive (718 945 0300). The owners also offer lessons on both the ocean and the bay.
