Pico RBNY is Rockaway’s best new restaurant

IMG_2513The post-Sandy restaurant scene in Rockaway continues to bring diverse menu offerings to the community. With the recent opening of Pico RBNY on Beach 129th Street, the peninsula now has it’s first full service Mexican restaurant. Owned by local resident Christopher Miles, Managing Partner, and the Keating family of neighboring East Meets West, Pico is a winner, and the best new restaurant in Rockaway this year.

One of the most unique features of Pico is the diversity of seating. Deep booths, four-tops and the bar were all packed early on Saturday evening. The best spot of all is the communal table in the center of the restaurant. The table was filled with diners enjoying the food and chatting with their dining companions.

The food is outstanding as well. The menu features the traditional Mexican restaurant fare: tacos, empanadas, tortas and an L.A. Burrito. Tacos are served in a soft shell, and the chicken was tender and well seasoned. The house specialty is any of the Carne Ahumadas. The smoked brisket was tasty, cooked to perfection, and not unnecessarily doused with sauces. All of the portions were sized generously, and most plates come a side of rice, beans and chunky guacamole. And the bartenders are serving up the best mojitos in Rockaway.

In spite of the crowds, the noise level in the restaurant was fairly moderate. It was mostly filled with neighbors greeting each other and happily swapping their rebuilding stories. As far as neighborhood dining options go, Pico best embodies Rockaway: good food, good drinks, at reasonable prices, of and for the community. It would be hard to not have a good time in Pico.
