CrossFit Floyd Bennett Field is Brooklyn’s newest box

IMG_2387Aviator Sports Center in the historic Floyd Bennett Field is now the home to Brooklyn’s newest CrossFit affiliate, CrossFit Floyd Bennett Field. The box, as CrossFit gyms are colloquially known, opened earlier this month in a 5,000 square foot space adjacent to the Aviator Ice Rink.

CrossFit is a highly varied strength and conditioning program with roots in military and civilian defense training. The box itself is fairly unassuming and does not have any of the equipment found in traditional gyms. Once entering the vast space, you will notice some climbing ropes, barbells and plates, wooden boxes, kettle bells and jump ropes. With this basic equipment, and constantly varying workouts (“WOD” stands for “workout of the day” for the uninitiated), CrossFit is designed to be a challenging yet also rewarding community.

IMG_2392All CrossFit athletes are required to complete an Elements course of six hours in order to better understand the basic movements. FBF offers 20 regularly scheduled classes per week, including four Elements sessions. All of the WODs are led by certified CrossFit coaches Steve Abgarian or James Wright, and can be scaled to each athlete’s ability.

The Box is easily accessible by bike, car or bus, immediately off the main entrance on Flatbush Avenue.
