Dalton’s is what Rockaway does best: the Irish bar & grill

Dalton's Seaside Grill, Rockaway Beach

IMG_2334The spate of new restaurant openings on the peninsula this year has been a bright spot for residents seeking a return to normalcy. And many beachgoers are extending their day trips into the evenings by settling in for some refreshments at Playland Motel, Sayra’s, and now Uma’s. These restaurateurs have brought diverse new food offerings in new settings to the Rockaways.

However a visitor to Rockaway would be remiss to not sample the excellent fare at Dalton’s Seaside Grill.  The peninsula is dotted with Irish bar and grills, and has been for decades. These staples have survived storms, floods, and economic downturns by strictly following the tenets of a successful food establishment: quality food at reasonable prices, served in a welcoming neighborhood setting.

Formerly known as Gallagher’s Snug Harbor, the Dalton family bought the restaurant about three years ago. Serving a reliable menu of seafood, steaks, raw bar, burgers and sandwiches, Dalton’s has long been a favorite of the locals. One of their signature plates is the Harbour Special, a roast beef and mozzarella sandwich served on garlic bread with fries, a carryover from the days of Frank Gallagher. At $10, the plate is the best way to finish a beach day.

Dalton’s also serves a Sunday brunch starting at noon, LobsterPalooza every Tuesday and Friday, and Steak and Ale night every Wednesday. Weekend evenings there is live music as well.

Owner Chris Dalton has been very appreciative of the community’s support since Hurricane Sandy struck. The flooding completely destroyed the commercial kitchen in the basement, but they were one of the first businesses to reopen after the storm. Indeed, Rockawayist and Eater were pleased to see the bar serving what few locals were still around by late November.

For a drink or a great meal, check out Dalton’s the next time you are in Rockaway. Their friendly staff are happy to serve you in the dining room, or even better, at the bar, where you can always meet a chatty local and catch up on the neighborhood happenings.
