Broad Channel is a small, tight knit community, with the Rockaways to the south, and Howard Beach to the north. It is the only inhabited island in Jamaica Bay, with a year-round population of approximately 3,000. It is served by the Far Rockaway line of the A train, and is home the beloved Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. This is not some remote Stephen King island.
Residents have long been accustomed to flooding and wearily obliged Mother Nature for years. However although the level of devastation this time is unprecedented, residents vow to rebuild. The unelected Mayor of Broad Channel, Dan Tubridy, has opened his home to neighbors and rescue workers, and his family has launched a FundRazr campaign to help displaced residents.
