Yoga on the Rocks

YogaRocksRockaway’s year-round business community continues to expand with the recent grand opening of Yoga on the Rocks. Owned and operated by New York native Lena Roca, this new wellness establishment adds to the growing entrepreneurial boom on the Rockaway Beach Boulevard corridor.

Growing up in Midwood, Lena was naturally drawn to the ocean as a respite from her busy household.  Easily accessible by bicycle, yet worlds away from the bustle of Avenue J, Lena found her space to study on the beaches of Brooklyn. On Manhattan Beach, Brighton Beach, and Coney Island in the 1980s, Lena forged her passion for the ocean.

Lena has lived in San Diego and Costa Rico, where she received her yoga certification, and also started to take up surfing. An avid Rockaway surfer for years, the idea to open a yoga studio seemed like a no-brainer.

At Yoga on the Rocks, the classes are all open-level Vinyasa (flow) yoga. The instruction is geared towards all levels, with an emphasis on fitness, rehabilitation and alignment. Yoga on the Rocks is donation-based: clients decide what to pay, and it becomes a truly community-supported business.

A graduate of the Swedish Institute of Massage Therapy, Lena is also a licensed massage therapist. Those services are offered at her studio as well by appointment.

In her off time, Lena loves to surf in Rockaway. “Rockaway is the only surfing beach where I am never the only girl”. Some of her favorite spots also include Boarders Surf Shop and Thai Rock.
