The Fisherman’s Dog

IMG_1628Rockaway’s newest addition to the food scene takes us over to Beach Channel Drive. Situated on lot adjacent to Jamaica Bay, with stunning views of the New York skyline, you will find The Fisherman’s Dog.

Earlier this year, childhood friends Terence McNicholas and Jared Adler found themselves downsized from their jobs and looking for a new opportunity. Jared had restaurant experience as a line cook in Freeport, LI, and Terence had the ideal location next to his father’s bait shop, a Rockaway staple for 40 years. A food truck seemed like the most logical, and economical solution. And The Fisherman’s Dog was born.

With a wide menu that includes cheese steak, hot dogs, sausage and peppers, grilled chicken, the stand out menu item is The Fish Dog: beer battered cod loin served on a hot dog roll with lemon and dill aioli. For those with bigger appetites, there is a larger Po’ Boy sized Fish Dog.

Their original plan was to set up a New England style clam shack, but DoH rules against serving raw seafood from a truck or shack (something they hope to change) precluded that idea. Terence and Jared re-tooled their menu to focus on traditional food truck fare, emphasizing white fish as their signature dish, but with a gourmet twist.

The food truck is ideally situated to serve both locals and visitors on the main thoroughfare. And unlike the beach side foodies, The Fisherman’s Dog plans to remain open for business throughout the off-season.

Terence and Jared have plans to put in seating behind the food truck, and fix up the patio so that diners can relax and enjoy the view and bay breezes. So the next time you are hungry and bemoaning the lack of good dining options in Rockaway, stop at the Fish Dog truck for a great meal and to wish these food entrepreneurs good luck!
